My grandfather died a little over a year before I was born.  He had a dollar and a half in his coat that day, which little money came to my mom.  Mother, who thought she could never have children, shortly discovered to her great joy that she was pregnant with me.

Mom was a wonderful Christian; she had a great faith and a generous heart.  She was a simple country girl from Texas with barely a high school education, but more than anything she wanted to know the Bible.  As the time came for her to deliver her only son, she gave the money she inherited from her father to a friend with careful instruction that she should purchase a Bible with that money on the very day I was born.  From the day of my birth, Mom dedicated me in her prayers to the study of the Bible.

God answered her prayers for me as the Bible has been the center of my life and the Savior of whom it speaks has become the passion of my heart.  The love of God is amazing in so many respects, but the fact that the gospel is so simple even a five year old child can understand and believe it is truly a wonder.  I was that child.  And from that early time nothing touched me like these ancient oracles of my Father in heaven.

God gave me faithful teachers in Sunday School in our little Baptist church where I grew up.  Later, He would give me several of the greatest scholars in both America and Europe to encourage my love of the text in the original languages.  After university I completed a Master of Theology (Th.M.), a Doctor of Law (J.D.), and a Master of Arts (M.A.), and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), each of these programs giving large gifts of training in careful interpretation of texts, particularly classical and biblical works.

God likewise gave me contexts for studying His holy Word.  He gave me a loving wife (Betty) to accompany me on the pilgrimage, and two wonderful children (Gracie and Nathan) to teach me what it means to be loved by my heavenly Father.  God also met me in several desperate hours of my life to convict me of great sin, to correct my misunderstanding of His love for me, to discipline me in love, and to break my heart with the overpowering grace of His forgiveness.  All the while and through it all, God was deepening my love for the Scriptures, which brought me life and liberty, and are springs of living waters for my soul.

This website is dedicated to the love of God to us expressed through the Trinity of God’s sacred Persons: Father God who has adopted us into His family, the Son of God who has espoused us to Himself, and the Spirit of God who makes us His temple in which to dwell.  May all who visit here find refreshment in Jesus, whose living Bread alone can satisfy, and whose Wine is the wine of joy.
